I'm a lover of non-fiction in any form, so travel memoir is one of my favorite genres. Some of it was a bit too 'out there' (the little voices, the writing to herself etc.) but some of it resonated with me and I definitely enjoyed the travel stuff, especially the Italy section. I certainly wish I could take off and spend time in all of the amazing places to which she traveled to gain understanding, although with husband and kids, it's not a path that's open to me or, I'm guessing, to most women. I think most of us 'of a certain age' are looking for that and find it (we hope!) in different ways. I have read the book a couple of times, and concur that although the author does come across as a little - or a lot - whiny and self-involved, I did enjoy reading about another woman's journey to find peace and happiness in her life. If nothing else, I've determined that I *really* need to get back to a regular yoga practice! Since I was there myself, however, it was nice to see some road out of it (and not necessarily the choices that she made either). I think that at another time and place in my life, I would have found the writer to be whiny and self-absorbed. And so for me, it was very meaningful as it provided me a framework to examine some things I had going on in my own life and to use someone else's journey as a stepping stone. I didn't see it as 'self-help' or a travel narrative but rather a autobiographical look at one person's emotional struggle placed against the backdrop of three different cultural influences. I have to say, reading it in this mindset was VERY meaningful for me as I had been struggling with a lot of spiritual and internalized issues. She recommended the book to me with the advice that I read it thinking about my own journey in life and how I would react or deal with the situations in front of me.
